The climate is temperate, with distinct seasons. The temperature may rise above 30 degrees in summer, while in winter it may fall as low as -20 degrees.
The capital is Budapest, the „Pearl of the Danube", with about 2 million inhabitants. It is the political, economic, commercial and cultural centre.
While Hungary is one of the most ethnically homogeneous countries in central Europe (90% of the population are Magyars), it has a number of different minorities.
Hungary is predominantly Christian, with Roman Catholics making up the majority, followed by Calvinists and Lutherans.
The country has been the member of the European Union since 2004, and the part of the Schengen area since 2008.
The school year starts at the beginning of September and finishes in June, and it is divided into two terms. The first term ends at the end of January. There is a short autumn holiday at the end of October and around Easter, and there is about a two-week holiday at Christmas.
